Terms of service

These terms cover your use of the Can I Cast It? app and this website. The important part is the second section: the app tells you what we believe the access position to be, which is not the same as permission to fish.

Last updated 29 September 2026.

Read this first. Fishing access changes, and our data can be wrong or out of date. Always confirm locally — with the club, the owner, the signage or the fishery — before you fish, and never rely on the app alone. You are responsible for holding a valid Environment Agency rod licence and for obeying local byelaws and any club rules.

1. Accepting these terms

By installing or using the app you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please uninstall the app. The app is under active development, which means it may contain defects, and features may change or be withdrawn.

2. What the access information is, and is not

The app maps fisheries, angling clubs, tackle shops and canal navigations, and marks each venue with an access state: free fishing, permit or day-ticket required, members or syndicate only, or private with no access.

That information is compiled from publicly available and third-party sources, including Angling Trust data and Canal & River Trust route data. It is provided for guidance only. In particular:

  • Ownership, leases, club control and ticket arrangements change, sometimes at short notice.
  • A venue marked as free may have become permit-only, or closed.
  • Closed seasons, byelaws, flood conditions and local restrictions are not modelled.
  • Coordinates locate a venue approximately, not a legal boundary or a right of way.
  • An access state is not permission, a licence, a ticket, or an invitation to trespass.

You must satisfy yourself that you are entitled to fish a particular stretch before you fish it. We give no warranty that the information is accurate, current or complete.

3. Rod licences and the law

In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or over fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence. The app does not sell, issue or verify licences. The licence wallet is a place for you to record your own details for your own convenience; the entries are typed by you, stored on your device, and are not proof of anything. Fishing without a licence is an offence, and that remains your responsibility.

4. Your own content

Notes, private spots and photos you create stay on your device. We do not receive them, so we make no claim to them and you grant us no licence over them. Equally, we cannot recover them for you: if you delete the app or lose the device, that data is gone. There is no cloud backup.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the app to trespass, to fish where you are not permitted, or to break any byelaw;
  • extract, scrape or redistribute the bundled datasets, or build a competing product from them — third-party data in the app is used under its own terms and is not ours to give away;
  • reverse engineer the app except to the extent the law expressly permits;
  • misrepresent the app's access information to others as authoritative.

6. Subscriptions

The core map, including every venue and its access state, is free. The optional Pro subscription raises the limits on saved and private spots and removes the sponsored tackle-shop card from venue pages.

Pro is sold through the App Store as a monthly (£2.99) or annual (£24.99) auto-renewing subscription, at UK prices. Payment is taken by Apple under Apple's terms, and the subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. You can manage or cancel it from inside the app (Manage subscription) or in your App Store account settings; refunds are handled by Apple. Until 1 December 2026, the monthly plan includes a 1 month free trial for eligible new subscribers; if you do not cancel before the trial ends, it converts to a paid monthly subscription. The annual plan has no trial. The terms Apple shows on its purchase sheet at the moment you subscribe are the ones that apply.

The pledge to direct 10% of subscription revenue to waterway and habitat projects is a commitment we intend to honour and report on. It is not a charitable donation made on your behalf, and it does not make your subscription tax-deductible.

7. Availability

We do not guarantee that the app will be available, error-free or supported indefinitely. Features may be added, changed or removed. Because the venue data ships inside the app, an update is required to receive corrections to it.

8. Liability

The app is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied warranties and are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the app or reliance on its information — including wasted journeys, refused access, fines, penalties or any consequence of fishing where you were not entitled to.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

Fishing carries real risks — deep and moving water, weather, and remote banks with no signal. Your safety on the bank is your own responsibility.

9. Third-party services

Map imagery is supplied by Apple Maps or Google Maps and is subject to their terms. Links to club websites and phone numbers are provided for convenience; we do not control or endorse them.

10. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the date at the top will change when we do, and continued use after a change means you accept it. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
